Oh what a pain it is getting old….Unfortunately, aches and pains are typical in our joints and muscles as we age. When the pain is in your back, the cause could be degenerative disc disease. Each disc between the vertebrae or backbones in your spine acts as a shock absorber, as we get older the center “cushioning” nucleus begins dehydrating and makes the disc less supportive and more prone to injury. The dehydrated disc can produce chemicals that irritate the surrounding tissue, resulting in back or neck pain and /or pain that radiates to the arms and legs.
Almost everyone’s discs dehydrate and degenerate with age. Some people don’t experience any pain from this process. However, others experience acute, chronic pain – something that also can occur after a tear or injury to the disc tissue. The Physicians at Spine Specialists of Michigan are experts at treating the pain caused by disc disease and the underlying causes of that pain. If the conservative approach of physical therapy, medications and/or steroid injections doesn’t relieve the pain, surgery may be necessary. We have several minimally invasive surgery options to treat disc degeneration and utilize Mazor Renaissance Robotic Technology for the best patient outcomes.
