What to expect during a stem cell therapy procedure

First off, here’s what won’t happen during stem cell therapy: nobody will cut you open.

Stem cell therapy is a non-surgical way to heal nagging injuries. Rather than making any incisions, a doctor injects stem cells into an area of pain like a bone or joint or, for certain conditions, puts them into the body intravenously.

That’s all there is to it.

It’s a 20-minute outpatient procedure. And because we use stem cells from umbilical cord blood, the procedure is even less invasive at Spine Specialists of Michigan than at other offices.

In most other offices, doctors take adult stem cells either from the bone marrow or fatty tissue around a patient’s hip, then inject those cells back into the body elsewhere. But drawing those stem cells is not always comfortable for the patient. It’s also not as effective as cord blood stem cells, which are richer in growth factors and perfect for regenerative medicine.

Most patients experience our stem cell therapy with minimal or no side effects.

Once the stem cells from cord blood are injected, they go to work helping your body heal itself. Targeted at an injured knee or hip, for example, the cells increase blood flow and bring healing nutrients to the area. They also reproduce quickly to help repair damaged tissue. That not only decreases your pain, but also accelerates your recovery and improves your ability to stay active.

And it’s all without having surgery!

The stem cells can ease pain and nurture healing for up to a year. There’s no follow-up appointment necessary after the outpatient procedure that’s done at our metro Detroit office in Bingham Farms.

If desired, a repeat injection at any time may enhance the healing effect. It also can be helpful to have stem cell therapy on different parts of your body at the same time to minimize and heal multiple points of pain.
