Have you had back surgery and are still dealing with pain every day? You may have failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS), which is chronic back or neck pain, with or without extremity pain that can occur if a spine surgery does not achieve the desired result. The pain can be caused by a recurrent disc herniation, pressure on a spinal nerve, altered joint mobility, scar tissue, muscle deconditioning, facet joint degeneration or sacroiliac joint degeneration. Common symptoms of FBSS are dull and aching pain involving the back and/or legs, and/or sharp, pricking, burning or stabbing pain in the extremities. You shouldn’t have to live with constant pain from a surgery that was supposed to fix the problem. Dr. Radden and Spine Specialists of Michigan can help! Dr. Radden will review your treatment history, particularly the type of surgery done and for what reason. A physical exam will be performed with attention to how your symptoms have evolved following your surgery, and diagnostic testing, such as an MRI, CT or X-rays may be ordered.
There are many treatment options available for FBSS and we will work diligently to find the best option for you and help you live a pain free life. Options may include; physical therapy, nerve blocks, medications, injections, chiropractic care, facet or sacroiliac joint rhizotomy or spinal cord stimulation. If these non-surgical options are not successful, a second surgery may be the best course to treat your pain.
